Otoplasty

Also known as Ear Correction Surgery

Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a cosmetic and a surgical procedure that is designed to correct the appearance of protruding or misshapen ears. It can also be used to address a variety of other ear-related issues, such as asymmetry or deformities caused by injury or birth defects.

There are several types of otoplasty procedures that can be performed depending on the patient's specific needs and goals. The most common types of otoplasty procedures include:

Ear Pinning: This procedure involves creating an incision behind the ear and repositioning the cartilage to create a more natural ear shape. The surgeon may also remove excess skin to further refine the ear's appearance.

Ear Reduction: This procedure is designed to reduce the size of large or protruding ears. The surgeon will remove excess cartilage and skin to create a more proportionate ear shape.

Ear Augmentation: This procedure is performed on patients who have underdeveloped or absent ears. The surgeon will use cartilage grafts to create a new ear structure that is more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing.

Ideal candidates for otoplasty are individuals who are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the results of the procedure.
Otoplasty is typically performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, although adults can also benefit from the procedure.

The surgery will take approximately 2 hours. The surgeon will make incisions behind the ears and reshape the cartilage as needed to create a more natural ear shape.

After the surgery, patients can typically return home the same day. Patients may be able to resume normal activities in a week’s time; but complete recovery may take around 6 weeks. Patients will need to wear a supportive headband or dressing for a week or two to aid in the healing process.

Follow-up appointments with the surgeon will be necessary to monitor the healing progress and ensure that the final results meet the patient's expectations.

Otoplasty is a safe and effective way to correct protruding or misshapen ears and some of its benefits include improved appearance, increased confidence, and a more natural-looking ear shape.
